What is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target and treat various skin imperfections. By delivering controlled pulses of light energy to the skin, IPL penetrates below the surface to address pigmentation issues, vascular lesions, and acne. The light energy is absorbed by pigment and blood vessels in the targeted area, causing them to break down and be naturally eliminated by the body over time. IPL is a popular, minimally invasive option for individuals seeking a clearer complexion without the downtime associated with more invasive procedures.

At Positively Beautiful, our IPL treatments are customized to your skin type and goals, ensuring a comfortable experience and optimal results.

The Nordlys™ system

At Positively Beautiful in Highland, Utah, we offer the Nordlys system, a device with the latest rejuvenating treatment technologies. The Nordlys system can treat dark spots, remove excess redness, resurface skin, and even provide nail treatment and hair removal.

The FDA-cleared Nordlys system has four primary technologies: Narrowband intense pulsedlight (IPL), which minimizes treatment risks relative to broadband IPL (BBL), two fractional non-ablative skin resurfacing technologies, and Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser technology.

How Does IPL Work?

During an IPL treatment, broad-spectrum light pulses are delivered to the skin, targeting the pigment or blood vessels responsible for skin discoloration and imperfections. The light energy is absorbed by melanin or hemoglobin, causing the targeted cells to break down and be naturally cleared away by the body. The treatment is relatively quick, typically lasting 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area being treated, and requires minimal downtime.

After treatment, you may experience mild redness or sensitivity, similar to a mild sunburn, which usually subsides within a few hours to a day. Over the following days, the treated areas gradually clear, revealing improved skin tone and clarity.

Nordlys Light & Bright™

Get bright, glowing skin!

The Nordlys Light & Bright™ treatment uses a combination of intense pulsed light (IPL) and a non-ablative fractional laser to improve redness and dark spots, resurface your skin, and stimulate your body’s own natural collagen production for bright, glowing skin. The treatment is backed by clinical studies.

The Light & Bright™ treatment is a series of treatments, typically done over 3 treatment
sessions. It consists of fractional non-ablative treatments (Frax 1550™ and/or Frax 1940™) along with narrowband IPL treatment on the Nordlys system.

Treatments for Specific Conditions

Rosacea
IPL is highly effective for treating rosacea, a chronic skin condition characterized by facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps. By targeting the red blood vessels, IPL can help reduce redness and calm rosacea flare-ups, leading to a more even skin tone. Multiple sessions may be recommended for lasting results, as rosacea is a chronic condition that can benefit from regular maintenance.

Red Telangiectasias
Red telangiectasias, or spider veins, are tiny, visible blood vessels that often appear on the face. IPL treats these by targeting the red pigments within the blood vessels, causing them to coagulate and eventually fade. This results in a smoother, clearer complexion free from visible veins.

Diffuse Redness
Diffuse redness refers to general redness and flushing across the face, often resulting from broken capillaries or sensitive skin. IPL can help reduce this redness by breaking down the pigment in dilated blood vessels, allowing your body to reabsorb and clear the pigment, leaving you with a more balanced skin tone.

Acne
IPL therapy can also be effective for treating active acne by targeting bacteria within the skin and reducing inflammation. The light energy from IPL penetrates into the skin layers, destroying acne-causing bacteria and reducing sebum production. This not only helps to clear active breakouts but can also prevent future ones, resulting in smoother, clearer skin.

Port Wine Stains
Port wine stains are a type of birthmark caused by abnormal blood vessels in the skin. IPL treatment can reduce the appearance of port wine stains by targeting the pigmented blood vessels and breaking them down over time. While multiple sessions may be needed, IPL offers a non-surgical option for diminishing the appearance of these birthmarks, helping to achieve a more even complexion.
